Sensory Tips for Halloween Costumes!

Does your kiddo have difficulty with new textures or smells? How about sensitivities to noise? Do they need fidgets or other tools for regulation? Not sure how to manage these when picking out a Halloween costume? Let us help you!

Sensitive to new textures or smells?

  • Use regular clothing as the base layer to avoid scratchy fabric or itchy tags

  • Practice wearing the costume ahead of time to ensure they’re comfortable in it

  • Wash the costume to soften the fabric and avoid funky smells

  • Consider the size and whether a compression vest or weighted vest could fit underneath it

Sensitive to sound?

  • Consider making ear protection a part of their costume (ears attached to ear muffs, securing ear protection under a hood or bandana, etc.)

Sensory tool ideas

  • Use chewelry as part of the costume, such as a shark tooth necklace or attach a chewing tool to their zipper

  • Will a fidget be needed? Ensure the costume has pockets or a built-in fidget, such as reversible sequin fabric
